Yappr is a made up word. It comes from the English slang word “to yap” which means to talk incessantly. So a “yapper” is someone that speaks incessantly. However the name “yapper.com” was too expensive! I purchased the incorrectly spelled “yappr.com” to save money!

Yappr.com will help you practice your English listening comprehension and pronunciation.

To practice understanding native speakers of English, pick a video to watch and follow along with (or, when you are confident, without) the subtitles. If you see a word you are unfamiliar with, click on it and a dictionary definition will appear. Click on the back and forward buttons to hear the phrase again. Or click on the clear voice button (third from the left) to hear the phrase repeated slowly.

YapOutLoud gives you immediate feedback on your spoken English. You will get feedback on each word you say, and if you log in you can watch your pronunciation improve over time!

I believe it is important to practice English every day, even for just a few minutes. It will help you start thinking in English. I hope the fun and interesting videos make it easy to spend a few minutes a day listening to native speakers of English. And remember, we have new videos every day!

If you find a mistake, you can fix it! Just login and click on the edit translation icon in the bottom right of the translation box. Edit and save. But be careful, as your corrections take effect immediately.

The sound skips because the sound is downloading slower than the video. The best thing to do is pause the video and wait until it is completely downloaded. (The video is completely downloaded when the horizontal bar at the bottom of the player is the full width of the player.) Then play it.

You can download the transcriptions and translations by logging in and clicking on the “text” tab on the page with the video. We are looking into providing a way to download the videos.

Click on the third button from the left below the video (“slow”). Do it as often as you want. It’s a great way to learn pronunciation.
